Dental Hygiene Through the Regulatory Looking Glass & Town Hall Panel
Arlynn Brodie, PhD, RDH – Registrar, Executive Director, CDHM
Arlynn will be providing a perspective of dental hygiene care from the lens of the dental hygiene patient. The presentation will be followed by an interactive panel discussion around all things dental hygiene with five panelists from the dental hygiene community. Kathy Yerex will join the stage to remind us of our professional responsibility when utilizing the many social media platforms.
About Arlynn: Arlynn Brodie is the Registrar/Executive Director for the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba. Arlynn worked clinically for 30+ years providing care in private, hospital and community health settings and has been involved in the administration of the dental hygiene profession provincially, and nationally since graduating from the University of Alberta (U of A). As an educator she taught at the U of A in the faculty of Medicine & Dentistry where she recently completed a PhD in Rehabilitation Science.

2018 Periodontal Classification System: Interpreting the Puzzle

Do you struggle to understand and implement the 2018 Periodontal Classification System? This session will provide dental hygienists with information that will help them interpret the individual pieces of this puzzle and how they fit together.
About Kathy: Kathy Yerex is a full-time Assistant Professor at the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba. As a Métis woman and educator, she takes great pride in increasing awareness of Indigenous perspectives in her teaching.
Kathy has co-authored several publications and helped to secure grant funding for research related to Indigenous Oral Health. She continues to pursue collaborative research projects focusing on education and the teaching of soft skills.
She is passionate about service to the dental hygiene profession. She is a member of and sits on the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association board. Kathy is also the elected Canadian Dental Hygienists Association Board of Director from Manitoba. She serves the University of Manitoba through her committee work on several College, Faculty and University-wide committees.
About Kaleigh: Kaleigh Warden is a full-time Instructor in the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba. Her primary teaching areas include Periodontology, Pain Management, Restorative Techniques for Dental Hygienists, and Oral Pathology. Additionally, Kaleigh is the third year Clinical Coordinator where she leads the coordination of all clinical activities for senior dental hygiene students.
Kaleigh completed her Master of Arts (Interdisciplinary Studies) in 2022 where she focused on Educational Studies and Organizational Leadership. Kaleigh brings with her a strong clinical background in preventive and restorative dental hygiene and has specialty experience in prosthodontics.
Kaleigh is dedicated to community service and serving her profession. She volunteers with several community organizations, including the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association. She currently serves as co-chairperson of the MDHA/SDH Mentorship Committee, a role she has held since the program’s inception in 2010.
Moving Toward Culturally Safe Practice
Faye Tardiff, Education and Training Coordinator-WRHA Indigenous Health
Cultural safety is an outcome based on understanding, respect, and cross-cultural engagement. Working from an Indigenous framework, cultural safety has relevance and applicability across all cultural groups. This presentation will examine the need for culturally safe practice in the dental profession. As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to: Understand the basics of Cultural Safety, identify the impacts of colonization on dental care and take steps to begin the cultural safety journey
About Faye: Faye Tardiff is a Metis woman with roots in the Red River settlement, Mariapolis, and South Junction with 30 years of experience as an inner-city educator. Faye’s background has included roles as a Team Leader, Department Head, and Acting Principal in addition to teaching English, Drama, History, Social Studies, and Psychology. Faye also taught at ‘The Adolescent Parent Centre’ where she taught high school credits and parenting courses to young mothers. More recently, Faye was part of a team of educators who wrote the “Indigenous Voices” and “Holocaust and Human Rights” units for the Winnipeg School Division.
How You Can Advocate for Change
Ondina Love, CAE – CEO of Canadian Dental Hygienists Association
This presentation will include an update on the work that CDHA is doing to advocate for dental hygienists in Canada, including details of the new Interim Dental Benefit. It will also include an overview of provincial advocacy that CDHA has done in collaboration with MDHA and interprofessional advocacy at the national level. There will also be an opportunity for an interactive discussion on local advocacy. The session will conclude with a presentation self-advocacy. How can dental hygienists advocate for themselves when it comes to working conditions, benefits, and other barriers to top performance and career satisfaction.
About Ondina: Ondina Love is the CEO of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association, representing over 30,000 dental hygienists across Canada. Ms. Love brings over 38 years in association management to Canada’s 6 th largest regulated health profession. She also serves as executive director of the Canadian Foundation for Dental Hygiene Research and Education. In addition, Ondina serves as chair of the Extended Healthcare Professionals Coalition.

MDA IPC Manual 2022 Revisions and Implications for Dental Hygiene Practice

Infection Prevention & Control, Regulation & Compliance , College of Dentistry, U of M
Given the revised Manitoba Dental Association Infection Prevention and Control manual effective Jan 2/23, this session is intended to highlight relevant changes required or recommended for Dental Hygiene clinical practice compared to the previous publication of the MDA IPC manual 2006. This session will also include discussion of other relevant infection control related concerns that have implications to Dental Hygiene clinical practice as well as, given risk of eye injury in Dental procedures for both clinicians and patients, outline prevention strategies.
About Cindy: Cindy Isaak-Ploegman has been an educator at the School of Dental Hygiene and College of Dentistry at University of Manitoba and a clinician for 30 years. She completed the novice certification program in infection prevention and control with IPAC Canada and Central Service Technician course through Purdue University and is certified by OSAP in Dental infection prevention and control. She is a certified investigator/inspector and completed her Masters in Adult Education in 2003 and has published in the areas of adult education, dental implant research, and dental unit waterline testing. She was research coordinator for the faculties of Dentistry and Social Work and currently is infection prevention and control officer with the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry and Quality assurance officer with the Centre for Community Oral Health.

About Val: Valerie Olivier is an RDH and Deputy Registrar with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba. Val has experience practicing clinically, in community health settings, as a dental hygiene educator, in research and administration.

Dental hygiene professionals depend on instrumentation skills for enhanced patient outcomes. However, we can only perform our best if our instruments are at their best. This presentation will remind you of the importance of keeping your instruments in pristine condition and demonstrate solutions and techniques to yield optimal performance from your dental hygiene instruments.
About Lorraine: Lorraine Glassford is a full-time faculty member at the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba. She currently serves as the Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinator for the second dental hygiene students and the course coordinator for Oral and Dental Anatomy, Dental Radiology, Preclinical Dental Hygiene, and Nutrition in Dentistry. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in 1986, her Diploma in Dental Hygiene in 1988, and her Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2022. Lorraine currently serves as an item writer for the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board, is a board member for the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba and serves on various committees for the University. She is passionate about advancing hand and power instrumentation skills in the dental hygiene curriculum.
